SUBMISSIONS CALL: MAI – FEMINISM & VISUAL CULTURE. DEADLINE 6 APRIL 2018

MAI is seeking academic research articles, interviews, creative writing, video essays, photographs, visual/audiovisual or interactive art.

PRESS RELEASE FROM MAI: FEMINISM & VISUAL CULTURE:

I’m writing to invite you to submit work for inclusion in MAI Journal, a new online journal of feminist works which respond to visual culture. I’ve just finished editing the creative responses for Issue 1 (which will be published in February), and now I’m commissioning work for Issue 2 on the theme of sexuality / sexualities with an emphasis on queer sex.

I’ll tell you a bit about the journal’s aims and what I’m looking for.

The focus of the journal is feminist responses to visual culture. The term ‘visual culture’ includes every aspect of the visual world – advertising, pornography, magazines, comics, graphic novels, consumables, cartons, billboards, internet, fashion, instagram, art, photography, sculpture, performance, gaming, collage, film etc.

I’m asking writers and artists to submit pieces of work which respond, in some way, to whatever most interests/provokes/aggravates/inspires you about visual culture and/or the representation (or absence) of women/different types of women. This includes, of course, creative responses to the work of feminist artists / conversations between feminist artists.

My long-term aim is to build a platform of dynamic, daring creative works which combine intelligent, questioning feminist thought with creative responses to visual culture.

We can host video works, writing, collage, sound works, interviews, collaborations etc. You may already have something which would work for MAI (it doesn’t necessarily have to be especially created work), or else the theme of visual cultures may prompt something new.

Here’s the website, through which you can also access the submissions details: https://maifeminism.com/

Although I’m especially looking for work on queer sexualities for Issue #2, I’d rather not restrict work to this theme so there’s a lot of latitude to work within.

The deadline for submissions of work is April 6th.

Very many best wishes,

Amy
